Before subscribing
Is home insurance mandatory for a student?
Yes. Home insurance is legally mandatory for all tenants in France, including students in CROUS or private residences. The residence or university may request it when handing over the keys. Without insurance, you are personally liable for any damage you cause to your accommodation, neighbours, or third parties.🚫 In the event of a claim without insurance, you will be responsible for the full financial consequences, which can amount to several thousand euros.
Is home insurance mandatory for students?
Yes. Every tenant in France, including students, is legally required to have at least basic insurance covering rental risks (fire, water damage, explosion). Your residence or CROUS may require a certificate when handing over the keys.💡 Without insurance, you are personally liable for any damage caused to the property, neighbours or third parties — amounts that can reach several thousand euros.
Who can take out Etudassur insurance?
Students and young professionals, whether French or international, renting accommodation in a student residence, CROUS or young professionals’ housing. For CROUS plans, you generally need to be under 28 when first applying for housing and continuing your studies.
Is my residence eligible for the Etudassur contract?
Your residence must be pre-registered in our database.
When subscribing, type its name in the search field: if it appears in the list, you can continue.
💡 Residence missing? Write to contact@etudassur.fr or contact us at 01.80.48.14.72. If your residence is not listed, it can be registered quickly (usually within 15 minutes once the request is processed).
How much does student home insurance cost?
Rates vary depending on the type of accommodation:
- CROUS residence: from €2.90/month (CROUS plan)
- Private student residence: from €4.83/month (Essential plan)
- Young professionals’ residence: from €4.83/month (Essential plan)
- Private accommodation with a landlord: online quote via Léocare
- Travel insurance abroad: from €26/month via Chapka
Etudassur offers an average saving of 50% compared to traditional home insurance with identical cover.
Which plan should I choose?
Your choice of Etudassur home insurance depends on your type of residence, your needs and the level of protection you want.
Living in a CROUS residence?
The CROUS plan covers essential risks: fire, water damage, weather events and tenant’s liability. Personal, academic and extracurricular liability is available as an option.
Living in a private student residence or young professionals’ housing?
Three plans are available:
-
Essential: ideal for small budgets. It includes fire, water damage, liability, glass breakage and home assistance.
-
XXL: more comprehensive protection, with additional cover such as theft and vandalism, extended glass breakage, electrical damage, lost keys, bedbugs and strike cover.
-
Do you have a bike? Add the Bike Theft option to your XXL plan for just €15 extra and receive compensation up to €300, with no excess, subject to your contract terms.
Our advice: choose the Essential plan for cost-effective protection, the XXL for enhanced cover of your belongings, and the XXL with the “bike” option if you also want to insure your bike against theft.
Please note: jewellery, art objects and valuables are excluded from cover. Limits and excesses depend on the plan chosen.
Detailed cover by guarantee is available on the Student Home Insurance page.
What cover is included? What is the difference between the plans?
Etudassur offers several home insurance plans tailored to your type of residence and the level of protection you want.
In a CROUS residence:
The CROUS plan includes essential cover: fire, water damage, weather events, natural and technological disasters, as well as tenant’s liability.
Personal, academic and extracurricular liability is available as an option. It is therefore not automatically included in the basic CROUS plan.
In a private student residence or young professionals’ housing:
-
Essential: fire, water damage, weather events, natural and technological disasters, tenant’s and personal liability, glass breakage and home assistance.
-
XXL: includes Essential cover and adds theft and vandalism, extended glass breakage, electrical damage, lost keys, bedbug treatment and strike cover.
-
Do you have a bike? Add the Bike Theft option to your XXL plan for just €15 extra and receive compensation up to €300, with no excess, subject to your contract terms.
The Essential and XXL plans also provide new-for-old compensation for IT and office equipment under two years old, up to the contractual limit of €2,000, for covered claims. They are also available for CROUS accommodation.
Limits, excesses and assistance services depend on the plan you choose.
To find out exactly what your cover includes, check your Policy Schedule in your customer area or via the documentation page.
What is the excess and how much will I have to pay?
The excess is the amount you pay for each claim.
At Etudassur, it is generally reduced to €100 for most cover, and to €0 for certain guarantees (XXL glass breakage, lost keys, bedbugs).
The exact amount per guarantee is shown in your Policy Schedule.
For example, if the cost of damage from a fire is €2,000, you will be reimbursed €2,000 minus the excess, i.e. €1,900.
What are the available contract lengths?
All our contracts are fixed-term and available for:
- 3 months,
- 6 months,
- 12 months (9 months + 3 months free).
The minimum contract length is 3 months — it is not possible to take out a contract on a monthly or weekly basis.
💡 No automatic renewal. If you leave before the end date, as the contract is fixed-term, it will automatically end on the scheduled date.
I am an international student, can I take out insurance with Etudassur?
Yes, regardless of your country of origin, as long as you are renting student accommodation in France.
The website is available in French, English, Chinese and Spanish. The contract is governed by French law.
For the health coverage required by some visas, Etudassur also offers a “Come to France” insurance via Chapka.
I am already covered by my parents’ insurance, do I need separate insurance?
Not always. Some home insurance policies taken out by parents cover the student who is part of the tax household for their student accommodation, but the coverage is often limited (lower limits, third-party liability only).
Check with your parents’ insurer.
If your residence requires a certificate in your name, a dedicated contract is often still necessary. This should be checked according to your parents’ policy.
Why is Etudassur cheaper than traditional insurance?
Etudassur specialises in a specific segment (students and young professionals in residences), which allows us to optimise pricing for this risk profile.
100% digital subscription eliminates physical distribution costs. The broker model allows us to negotiate directly with the insurer Hiscox for terms tailored to the volume and profile.
💡 Etudassur advertises an average saving of 50% with identical cover compared to traditional home insurance.
Is Etudassur reliable?
Yes. Etudassur is a brand of the broker ACCS, registered with ORIAS under No. 07 002 006 (verifiable at orias.fr). The home insurance contracts are underwritten by the insurer Hiscox SA, and the activity is regulated by the ACPR. We have over 200,000 customers and 1,000 partner residences.
Parents' questions
Can I take out and pay for insurance for my child?
Yes. A parent can take out and pay for the contract for their student child. The contract must be in the name of the student occupying the accommodation (the insured), with their accommodation details.
💡 Keep the customer area login details: this is where you will find the certificate and post-subscription procedures (change of address or flat number, proof of address, claims declaration, etc.).
Is my child really well protected with this insurance?
The policy covers the legal requirements (third-party liability and rental risks) as well as the main everyday risks for students.
The XXL plan adds theft, glass breakage extended to ceramic hobs, electrical damage, lost keys, and bedbug disinfection. A 24/7 assistance service also supports your child in case of an emergency.
Etudassur positions itself as a fair broker for a fair contract at a fair price.
My child is studying abroad—what should I plan for?
For accommodation abroad, French home insurance does not apply (coverage limited to 3 months for stays).
In this case, for a long stay, consider a Chapka travel insurance policy (medical expenses, assistance, repatriation). If your child keeps their accommodation in France, their home insurance policy remains active.
Does my home insurance already cover my student child?
Some home insurance policies cover a child attached to the tax household for their student accommodation, but often with limits (caps, third-party liability only). Check with your insurer.
If the residence requires a certificate in the student’s name, a dedicated policy is usually necessary. Verify based on your policy.
Can I manage my child’s policy remotely?
Yes, via the client portal using the policy credentials:
- download certificates,
- renewal,
- claim reporting,
- address change,
- apartment number change.
All procedures are online and accessible wherever you are.
My accommodation & my situation
I’m in coliving/a shared flat—how does it work?
In a coliving situation, you can take out a policy for a single room (studio). Your policy covers your private space AND the shared areas—the cover extends to the common areas on a pro-rata basis according to the number of occupants.
💡 No need to take out a policy covering the entire flat. A studio policy is sufficient.
I’m renting from a private landlord—can I be insured through Etudassur?
The Etudassur policy is reserved for listed residences. For accommodation with a private landlord or a standard shared flat, we refer you to our partner Léocare, which specialises in this type of accommodation. You can be redirected from our website.
💡 Moving from a student residence to a private rental during your policy? Contact us—we can provide you with a Léocare quote.
Which student residences are partners with Etudassur?
Etudassur works with the majority of private student residence networks in France, including Estudines, Nemea, Kley, and many other private residences listed in their system.
For CROUS residences, a specific CROUS plan is offered starting at €2.90 per month.
To find out if your residence is listed, get a quote at souscription.etudassur.fr — the list appears during sign-up. If it is not, feel free to contact us by email (contact@etudassur.fr) or by phone at 01.80.48.14.72 and we will add it as soon as possible.
💡 Over 1,000 partner residences across France.
Is there a difference between insuring a CROUS residence and a private residence?
Yes.
The CROUS plan (€4,500 cover, from €2.90/month) is designed exclusively for public university housing.
Private residences have access to the Essentielle, XXL and XXL+Bike plans (cover up to €7,500).
The correct product is displayed based on your residence during sign-up.
Is my furnished accommodation covered — is the landlord’s furniture insured?
All our policies include cover for furniture provided by the landlord that you are responsible for.
In a furnished property, please note: damage to the property itself is often covered by the landlord’s PNO insurance (IRSI convention), while your policy covers your personal belongings.
Do I have accommodation rented from a private individual (not a student hall of residence)—can I still take out insurance?
The Etudassur (Hiscox) residence contract is reserved for approved halls of residence. For a standard flat rented from a private individual, Etudassur will direct you to its partner Léocare, whose quote is available online. The Léocare contract is managed directly by Léocare.
My studio or room is very small—am I still well covered?
Yes. The price and cover are fixed and tailored to student housing, regardless of size. The contract specifies the number of main rooms during sign-up.
Private student residence
What is the difference between the CROUS, Essentielle and XXL plans?
Etudassur offers several plans depending on your type of residence:
CROUS: for CROUS residences only, €4,500 cover, basic guarantees only.
Listed private residences: Essentielle or XXL (maximum cover including theft, lost keys, bedbugs, electrical damage and strike cover).
You can find a comparison of the plans on the Student home insurance page.
⚠️ The plan you have taken out is the one shown on your Policy Schedule (PS), available in your customer area. Check it before making any claim.
Which plan should I choose for a private student residence?
For a private residence (Estudines, Nemea, Kley, etc.),
Etudassur offers 3 plans:
Essentielle: from €4.83/month — basic guarantees (fire, water damage, third-party liability), €6,000 cover.
XXL: from €6.08/month — plus extended glass breakage, theft, lost keys, bedbugs, electrical damage, €7,500 cover.
💡 Do you have a bike? Add the Bike Theft option to your XXL plan for just €15 extra and benefit from compensation up to €300, with no excess, according to your contract terms.
Find out more about home insurance for private student residences.
Is payment made monthly or annually?
The Etudassur contract requires a single full payment at sign-up — no monthly payments, no direct debit.
For a private residence, from €58 per year (Essentielle plan). The exact amount is calculated based on the chosen duration (3, 6 or 12 months).
Is key loss covered in private accommodation?
Yes, only in the XXL and XXL + Bike plans. The key loss cover reimburses key replacement up to €100, with no excess, and can be activated once per contract.
In case of an emergency door slam, call assistance on 01.55.98.71.14 before contacting any external locksmith.
⚠️ The Essential plan does not cover key loss.
Are bedbugs covered in private accommodation?
Yes, only in the XXL plan, with a €500 limit and a 2-month waiting period from the contract start date.
The cover includes the intervention of a certified professional for the treatment and decontamination of your accommodation.
It can be activated once per contract.
⚠️ Not applicable if you report the infestation within the first 2 months of the contract. Not covered: material damage caused by bedbugs, such as bedding.
To find out what steps to take in case of an infestation, also read our article on reporting and treating bedbugs.
How can I avoid locksmith or plumber scams with assistance?
Etudassur assistance (01.55.98.71.14, 24/7) has a network of approved tradespeople with controlled rates—locksmiths, glaziers, plumbers, and electricians.
By calling assistance first, you will be put in touch with a professional whose rates are regulated, protecting you from common scams (e.g., locksmiths charging exorbitant prices).
🚫 Calling a locksmith yourself without going through assistance = non-reimbursable costs and risk of price gouging.
Does my contract also cover the shared areas of my shared accommodation?
Yes. In the case of a shared flat, all Etudassur contracts extend the cover to shared areas (kitchen, living room, hallway, shared bathroom) on a pro-rata basis according to the number of flatmates. The number of rooms stated in the contract only refers to your private bedroom—it does not include shared areas.
💡 In shared accommodation, each flatmate should ideally have their own home insurance contract.
Is furniture provided by the residence covered by my Etudassur insurance contract?
This depends on the nature of the damage and the cover in question.
In a furnished student residence, items belonging to the landlord or the residence may, particularly in the case of water damage under the IRSI agreement, need to be covered by the landlord’s or residence’s insurance.
However, you may be held liable if you personally caused damage to an item that was entrusted to you. The applicable cover then depends on the circumstances of the claim and your contract.
In the event of damage to furniture or equipment belonging to the residence, report the incident to Etudassur.
The claims team will tell you which insurer should intervene.
Does my accommodation remain insured if I go away for a long holiday?
Yes—this is explicitly stated in your Policy Schedule: your accommodation remains insured even during prolonged absences.
This includes risks such as fire, water damage or intrusion while you are away.
⚠️ Beyond 30 consecutive days of total unoccupancy, some covers may be subject to conditions. Check your Policy Schedule or contact contact@etudassur.fr if you are away for more than 30 days.
How is my computer equipment compensated in the event of a claim?
Under the Essentielle and XXL plans, office and computer equipment (computers, phones, tablets) is covered up to €2,000, with compensation for the full replacement value if the device is less than 2 years old. Beyond that, depreciation is applied.
The device must be less than 10 years old to be covered.
⚠️ If the device is under manufacturer’s warranty, contact customer service first before activating the insurance.

CROUS
Is insurance mandatory in a CROUS residence?
Yes. Home insurance is mandatory for all tenants of CROUS accommodation, just as it is for any accommodation in France. The CROUS may ask for a certificate when handing over the keys. Without insurance, you would be personally liable for any damage caused to your neighbours or the accommodation.
💡 With Etudassur, you receive your home insurance certificate immediately after subscription — handy for the key handover meeting.
Why is CROUS insurance cheaper than in a private residence?
The Essentielle CROUS plan starts at €2.90/month as it is tailored to the specific risk profile of public university accommodation.
The guaranteed sum insured is €4,500 (vs €6,000 in private residences), which corresponds to the typical personal property of a CROUS student.
💡 In CROUS accommodation, flats are generally smaller and personal property more modest than in private residences — coverage is adjusted accordingly.
What cover is included in the CROUS plan?
Etudassur’s CROUS plan is specifically designed for students living in CROUS university residences.
It allows you to meet your home insurance obligation at an affordable price, starting from €2.90/month.
What cover is included?
Your policy includes the following, among others:
-
Fire and related events: up to €4,500, with a €100 excess.
-
Water damage: up to €4,500, with a €100 excess.
-
Weather events: up to €4,500, with a €228 excess.
-
Natural disasters: up to €4,500, with the legal excess applied.
-
Technological disasters: up to €4,500, with a €100 excess.
-
Terrorist attacks and acts of terrorism: up to €4,500, with a €100 excess.
-
Tenant’s liability: up to €10 million, including €300,000 for claims from neighbours and third parties.
The policy also includes cover for furniture provided by your landlord, under the contractual terms.
Can I add Personal Liability cover?
Yes. Personal Liability, including for school and extracurricular activities, is available as an option.
It covers your liability for certain accidental damage caused to third parties in your daily life or during your school activities, under the terms of the policy.
What is not covered?
The CROUS plan does not include the additional cover available in private residence plans, such as:
-
Glass breakage.
-
Theft and vandalism.
-
Lost keys.
-
Electrical damage.
-
Bedbug treatment.
-
Bicycle theft.
To find out exactly what your policy covers and any associated services, check your Policy Schedule in your Etudassur customer area.
How do I provide my insurance certificate to the CROUS?
Your home insurance certificate is sent automatically by email as soon as payment is confirmed.
You can also download it at any time from your customer area (assure.etudassur.fr → “My documents”).
💡 If the CROUS asks for a certificate before your arrival, subscribe online the day before or on the day of key handover — you will receive the certificate within minutes.
What does civil liability cover for CROUS accommodation?
Your Etudassur home insurance for CROUS accommodation includes Tenant’s Civil Liability. You can also take out Private, School and Extracurricular Civil Liability as an optional extra.
1. Tenant’s Civil Liability — Included
This protects you financially if you are responsible for accidental damage caused to your accommodation or the building.
Examples:
-
An accidental fire damages your CROUS room.
-
A water leak from your accommodation causes damage to the flat below.
-
Water damage for which you are responsible harms the building.
The cover also includes claims from neighbours and third parties for damage originating in your accommodation.
2. Private, School and Extracurricular Civil Liability — Optional
This protects you if you accidentally cause bodily injury or material damage to others in your daily life or as part of your studies.
Examples:
-
You accidentally break a classmate’s computer.
-
You unintentionally injure someone while taking part in an amateur sports activity.
-
You cause damage during an internship organised by your educational institution, under the conditions set out in the contract.
Remember: Tenant’s Civil Liability is automatically included in your CROUS plan. To also be covered in your private life and school activities, consider taking out the Private, School and Extracurricular Civil Liability option.
The cover applies within the limits, conditions and exclusions set out in your contract.
Does CROUS insurance also cover shared rooms or university halls?
Yes. Etudassur CROUS insurance is suitable for all types of student accommodation: individual rooms, studios, and university halls.
The contract specifies the number of main rooms in your accommodation when you take out the policy.
💡 In the case of a room with shared areas (kitchen or bathroom), the cover extends to the communal spaces on a pro-rata basis according to the number of occupants.
In what cases will the claim not be covered even in CROUS accommodation?
Even though your CROUS home insurance covers the main rental risks, certain events or types of damage may be excluded from the cover.
This is particularly the case for:
-
damage caused intentionally by the policyholder;
-
normal wear and tear and deterioration of property;
-
damage resulting from a lack of maintenance when excluded by the contract;
-
events occurring before the insurance came into effect;
-
damage covered by an optional extra that has not been taken out.
Beware of reporting deadlines: a delay does not automatically result in a refusal to pay compensation.
In accordance with the terms of the contract and Article L.113-2 of the French Insurance Code, the insurer must be able to demonstrate that the delay caused them prejudice in order to invoke forfeiture of cover, under the applicable conditions.
We therefore recommend that you report any claim as soon as you become aware of it, even if the usual deadline has passed.
If in doubt, contact sinistre@etudassur.fr.
What contract length should I choose for CROUS accommodation?
The available lengths are 3, 6 or 12 months (9 months + 3 months free).
For typical CROUS accommodation (one academic year), the 12-month length is the most suitable. If you only occupy the accommodation for one semester, opt for 3 or 6 months.
The contract is for a fixed term with no automatic renewal — it is not automatically extended. Remember to renew before the end.
💡 The minimum length is 3 months — no monthly contract is available.
Can an international student take out Etudassur CROUS insurance?
Yes. International students can take out Etudassur insurance regardless of their country of origin, as long as they are renting student accommodation in France. The website is available in English, Chinese and Spanish. The contract is governed by French law.💡 For foreign students coming to France, Etudassur also offers “Come to France” travel health insurance via Chapka (from €56/month), which is often required for visas.
How do I cancel my CROUS contract if I leave the accommodation before the end?
All our contracts are for fixed terms with no automatic renewal. There is therefore no need to cancel them; they will expire automatically on the end date shown on the certificates.
However, you can let us know about your departure directly from your customer area (assure.etudassur.fr) by uploading your move-out inventory.
House share
In a shared flat, does each tenant need their own insurance?
There are two options: either each flatmate takes out their own policy, or one flatmate takes out a single policy and extends the cover to the others, provided they are named in the contract. To do this, add them via your customer area.
Are the shared areas of my flat covered?
Yes, and this is a specific feature of etudassur’s student home insurance policies.
In a shared flat, cover extends to shared rooms (kitchen, living room, shared bathroom) on a pro-rata basis according to the number of flatmates. You should therefore choose a T1 if you only have one room in a shared flat.
How do I add a flatmate to my policy?
To add a flatmate, you must first take out the home insurance policy. You can then do this directly from your customer area by clicking the “add a flatmate” button.
You must provide the details of all occupants sharing the accommodation so that they are covered.
Accommodation with a private individual
I’m renting a flat from a private landlord, outside a residence — how do I get insured?
For accommodation outside a registered residence (a flat rented from a private landlord), Etudassur will direct you to its partner Léocare. You can get a quote online on the Léocare website via the Etudassur link. Etudassur’s home insurance policy is reserved for registered student and young professional residences.
💡 Léocare is a digital insurer tailored to traditional housing, for students and young professionals alike.
What’s the difference between residence insurance and insurance for a private rental?
Home insurance for student residences (Etudassur) is designed for registered student/young professional residences, with simple fixed-price plans.
Insurance for a private rental (Léocare) is tailored to traditional housing (a flat or studio rented from a private landlord) with pricing based on the size, location, etc.
Both cover the essential guarantees of a home insurance policy.
I’m leaving my residence for a traditional flat — does my policy follow me?
No. Your Etudassur residence policy cannot be transferred to a private rental. You must cancel your residence policy (via your customer area, with an exit inventory) and take out a new policy with Léocare for your new flat.
Who manages my contract if I go through Léocare?
If you subscribe via Léocare, your contract is managed by Léocare, not by Etudassur. Claims, certificates and queries go through Léocare’s channels. Etudassur only acts as a referrer for the initial orientation.
⚠️ Do not confuse the contacts: for a Léocare contract, contact Léocare directly; for a contract in a student residence, contact Etudassur.
In a shared flat in a private apartment, who should take out the insurance?
In a standard shared flat, ideally each flatmate takes out their own insurance, or a single contract covers everyone with all flatmates named. This depends on the tenancy agreement setup. With Léocare, check the shared accommodation options when getting a quote. Verify according to your tenancy agreement and the contract taken out.
Young professionals
Who can take out young professionals insurance with Etudassur?
Young professionals residence insurance is for young employees and professionals living in a serviced residence for young professionals (e.g.: Kley, Nexity, Studea Jeunes Actifs, etc.). It offers the same coverage as for private student residences, tailored to this specific type of residence.
💡 If you are still a student but on an apprenticeship or long-term internship, you can choose either the student or young professionals plan depending on your type of residence.
What is the cost of young professionals insurance?
Young professionals residence insurance starts at €4.83/month (from €58/year) for the Essential plan. The XXL plan starts at €6.08/month. You can subscribe at etudassur.fr by selecting “Young professionals residence“.
As a student or young professional, is my remote working covered?
Your Etudassur insurance includes private life civil liability cover. This may apply to damage related to your private life, in accordance with the terms of your contract.
However, damage resulting from your professional activity, even when carried out at home, is not covered by this cover, except in cases expressly provided for in the contract, particularly for certain internships.
To find out about insurance covering your professional activity and work equipment, please contact your employer.
I am moving to a different young professionals residence — what should I do with my contract?
If you move to another young professionals or student residence, you can change your residence directly from your customer area at no extra cost and without a new contract.
If you move to a private rental (flat with a private landlord), your current contract does not cover this type of accommodation — you will need to subscribe via Léocare.
💡 Your cover continues without interruption during the change of residence via the customer area and insures both properties for a period of 2 months.
Does my contract cover damage I cause during an internship or work-study programme?
Your Etudassur home insurance may cover your civil liability during an internship organised as part of your studies, provided that the Private Life Civil Liability cover is included in your contract.
Which internships are covered?
The cover applies in particular to professional internships organised by the school or university in which you are enrolled, whether they are paid or not.
It may apply if you accidentally cause damage to a third party during your internship, according to the conditions set out in the contract.
Is equipment entrusted to me during my internship covered?
Yes, the Special Conditions provide cover for material and immaterial damage caused to property entrusted to you during study internships, whether paid or not, up to a limit of €300,000.
What if I am on a work-study programme?
It is important to distinguish between study internships and professional activities carried out under a work-study employment contract.
The cover provided for internships does not mean that all your salaried professional activities are covered.
Damage caused in the normal course of your professional activity may be covered by your employer’s professional civil liability insurance.
What about abroad?
The Private Life Civil Liability cover may also apply during a study internship abroad of less than 3 months, under the conditions set out in the contract.
If your institution requires a specific certificate for your internship, contact contact@etudassur.fr to check that the cover meets the requirements of your agreement.
Are my bicycle or scooter covered as a young professional?
The bicycle is covered only under the XXL + Bike formula (limit €300, no excess), subject to strict anti-theft and storage conditions. The electric scooter is not covered by Etudassur contracts — this is an explicit exclusion in the General Conditions. For your scooter, specific insurance is required (legally mandatory for motorised scooters).
Is my pet covered by my young professional insurance?
Your pet is covered by the Private Life Civil Liability for damage it may cause to third parties — including if it is entrusted to someone free of charge.
However, your pet’s veterinary expenses are not covered.⚠️ Category 1 and 2 dogs (Staffordshire, Rottweiler, etc.) are excluded from the Private Life Civil Liability cover.
Is the glass breakage cover different in the XXL and Essential plans?
Yes. The Glass Breakage cover is available in both the Essential and XXL plans, but its scope and excesses differ.
Essential Plan:
It covers in particular the glazing of the home specified in the contract, such as windows and bay windows.
A £100 excess applies.
XXL and XXL + Bike Plans:
The cover is extended to other elements, including glass and mirrors incorporated into furniture, aquariums and ceramic hobs.
No excess applies to this cover.
Please note: a £0 excess does not necessarily mean that all expenses are reimbursed without limit. Compensation remains subject to the limits, exclusions and conditions set out in the contract.
Does the strike cover also apply to young professionals?
The Strike Cover (£50 for taxi/PHV) is included in the XXL plan. It applies specifically for national exams and official competitive examinations with an invitation. If you are on a work-study programme or in continuing education with official exams, you may benefit from it. It does not apply for commuting to work (professional use not covered by Private Life Civil Liability).
As a young professional, am I covered if I cause damage to my neighbour?
Yes, this is precisely what the Tenant’s Civil Liability covers. If you cause water damage to the neighbour below, a fire that spreads, or any other material damage resulting from a covered loss, your contract covers repairs to the neighbour up to a limit of €300,000 for claims from neighbours and third parties.
💡 As soon as a neighbour is involved in a loss, it is essential to complete a joint loss report (for water damage or fire) signed by both parties to facilitate the process.

Can I pay monthly or by bank transfer?
No. We only accept full payment by debit or credit card at the time of subscription.
I’ve paid but haven’t received my contract/confirmation
Several possible causes:
- Payment pending: your bank has not yet validated the transaction — wait 24 hours. If no confirmation arrives, the payment will be declined and you will not be charged.
- Transaction declined: failed payment attempt on the bank’s side — try again, possibly using a different browser or private browsing.
- Email in spam: the confirmation may be in your junk folder.
💡 If in doubt, send us a screenshot of your bank statement showing the last 4 digits of your card — we will check on our system.
How do I take out Etudassur insurance?
Subscription is 100% online in less than 3 minutes at souscription.etudassur.fr.
Enter your accommodation details, choose your plan, pay by bank card, and immediately receive your home insurance certificate by email.
No post, no appointment, and no handwritten signature required.
💡 For accommodation with a private landlord (outside a residence), the quote is done via Léocare from the website.
Is payment made monthly or in one go?
The contract requires a single payment at subscription by bank card — no monthly payments or direct debit. The amount corresponds to the chosen duration (3, 6 or 12 months).
I made a mistake during my subscription, how can I correct it?
This depends on the error:
-
Error on the start date: if your contract has not yet begun, you can bring the start date forward by up to 7 days from the initially chosen date, directly from your customer area.
This change also brings forward the start of your cover. It can never be backdated.
If your contract has already started, the start date can no longer be modified.
- Plan or accommodation: it is not possible to modify an active contract; you will generally need to take out a new contract and request cancellation of the old one.
Contact contact@etudassur.fr with your contract number. The exact steps will be provided based on the timeframe and type of error.
Can I cancel after subscribing?
Yes, you have a 14-calendar-day cooling-off period from the date of subscription, with no justification or penalty required, as set out in the French Insurance Code. Cancellation can be requested from your customer area or by email. ⚠️ You lose this right if a claim occurs during the cooling-off period.
I haven’t received a confirmation email after payment, what should I do?
First, check your spam/junk mail. If nothing appears, it is possible that the transaction did not go through — your contract has then not been created. Check your bank statement and contact support with the date and time of the attempt. Do not re-subscribe multiple times without checking.
Can discount codes be combined?
Etudassur discount codes are subject to conditions (minimum contract duration, limited validity, generally not combinable with each other).
What contract duration should I choose?
Choose a duration that matches your lease (3, 6, 12 months). The contract is for a fixed term with no automatic renewal: it does not renew automatically, so remember to renew it before it ends.
💡 The minimum duration is 3 months.
I’ve been charged twice / I’ve subscribed twice, what should I do?
Contact support without delay with your bank statement and the dates of the transactions. If a duplicate contract was created in error, the team can cancel it and refund the duplicate.

Modify my contract & move home
I’m changing flats or moving to a different address in the same residence
Several cases depending on your situation:
- Same residence, same type of accommodation (studio → studio): change directly via your customer account
- Same residence, different size (studio → 2 rooms): new contract required – contact us at contact@etudassur.fr
- Different referenced residence: change directly via your customer account
- Non-referenced residence: current coverage cannot be transferred – subscribe via our partner Léocare if the accommodation is private
💡 Always specify whether your new accommodation is still a studio and the date of the change.
I want to change my plan after signing up
It is not possible to modify the plan of an active contract. Procedure: Cancel the current contract if within 14 days → full refund. Take out a new contract with the desired plan.⚠️ After 14 days, cancellation is no longer possible — no full refund. Early termination only entitles you to a pro-rata refund.
I made a mistake on the start date of my contract
Yes, provided your contract has not yet started.
You can bring forward the effective date by a maximum of 7 days from the initially chosen date, directly through your customer account.
This change also allows you to bring forward the start of your cover so you are insured earlier than planned.
Example: you have taken out a contract with an effective date of 20 September. You can bring the start date forward to 13 September, provided you make this change before the cover begins and never set a date earlier than the day of the change.
Important:
-
If your contract has already started, the effective date can no longer be changed.
-
It is never possible to insure a past period retrospectively.
-
The change is limited to 7 days from the initially planned date.
To make this change, log in to your Etudassur customer account.
I’m changing accommodation – does my contract follow me?
If you are moving to another referenced residence, you can change your address directly through your customer account. If you are moving to a privately rented property, the residence contract does not apply – you will need to subscribe via Léocare. The exact procedure will depend on your new accommodation.
If your change of accommodation is part of a move, our practical student moving guide may also help.
I entered the wrong flat number – how can I correct it?
Correct the flat number through your customer account and instantly receive your new attestation, or contact support with your contract number. It is important that the insured address exactly matches your actual accommodation.
Can I change my plan during the contract?
No, it is not possible to modify the plan of an ongoing contract. To switch to another plan, you generally need to cancel the current contract and take out a new one. Contact support for the appropriate procedure.
How do I change the address of my insured accommodation?
Several scenarios apply when changing accommodation:
1/ If you remain in a residence but move to a studio, you can update the address on your contract via your customer area and receive your new certificate.
2/ If you change the type of accommodation, for example by moving from a studio to a two-room flat, a new contract must be taken out to properly insure your new home.
Contact our team at contact@etudassur.fr so they can assist you with this process and check the possibilities for a potential refund of the unused period of your previous contract.
This refund is not automatic and depends on the conditions applicable to your situation.
3/ You are moving to a non-student residence. We only insure student residences through Etudassur, but we can offer you a standard home insurance policy via our partner Leocare. To do this, I invite you to get a quote using the following link:
Can I modify the dates of my contract?
Yes, provided your contract has not yet started.
You can bring forward its start date by a maximum of 7 days from the initially chosen date, directly from your customer area.
This modification also allows you to bring forward the start of your cover to be insured earlier than planned.
Example: You have taken out a contract starting on 20 September. You can bring forward its start date to 13 September, provided you make this change before the cover begins and never set a date earlier than the day of the modification.
Important:
-
If your contract has already started, its start date can no longer be modified.
-
It is never possible to insure a past period retrospectively.
-
The advance is limited to 7 days from the initially planned date.
To make this change, log in to your Etudassur customer area.
Can I add cover (e.g. for a bicycle) after taking out the policy?
Adding cover is equivalent to changing your plan, which is not possible on an ongoing contract. You need to take out the plan that includes the desired cover. Confirm with support based on your situation.
I wanted the XXL plan but took the Essentielle one, how can I change?
A current contract cannot be changed to a different plan. The process usually involves taking out a new subscription in the correct plan and cancelling the old contract (possible within the 14-day cooling-off period). Contact support quickly.
Termination & renewal
Can Etudassur cancel my previous insurance?
In certain situations, particularly when cancellation can be carried out under applicable regulations, Etudassur can assist you with the process with your previous insurer.Contact contact@etudassur.fr and attach a copy of your previous contract or insurance certificate. The document must allow identification of:
- the name of your previous insurer;
- your contract number;
- the insured property;
- and, if possible, the contract expiry date.
Our team will review your situation and let you know if cancellation can be carried out on your behalf.⚠️ Do not cancel your previous insurance before ensuring your new cover is in effect, to avoid any uninsured period.
Why has my premium increased compared to last year?
Your Etudassur home insurance premium may change from one year to the next, particularly due to changes in the tax regulations applicable to insurance contracts and the evolving costs in the sector.
What are the main reasons for this change?
1. The increase in the natural disaster contribution
Since 1 January 2025, the surcharge rate intended to fund the compensation scheme for natural disasters has increased from 12% to 20% for the relevant home insurance policies.
This regulatory increase applies to all relevant insurers.
2. The evolution of the contribution to the Guarantee Fund for Victims of Acts of Terrorism
This mandatory contribution, commonly known as the “terrorism tax”, increased from €5.90 to €6.50 per contract from 1 July 2024.
It helps fund compensation for victims of acts of terrorism and other offences.
3. The evolution of insurance costs
Premiums may also change to reflect the costs of claims settlements, repairs, and the negotiated pricing terms with our partner company.
Our commitment: Etudassur continues to prioritise accessible home insurance, with cover tailored to students and young professionals.
To find out the current premium applicable to your accommodation, you can run a simulation directly on our website.
How do I cancel my contract before its end date?
Etudassur home insurance contracts are offered for a fixed term of 3, 6 or 12 months, with no automatic renewal.
Your contract therefore automatically ends on its expiry date, with no obligation to renew.
If you leave your accommodation before this date, you can report your departure from your customer area, particularly by submitting your move-out inventory.
Please note: leaving your accommodation early does not automatically entitle you to a refund of the remaining insurance period.
However, certain situations may be reviewed by our team, particularly in the event of a change in the type of accommodation or a new policy taken out for another property.
The possibilities for early cancellation depend on the reason given, the applicable legal provisions and the terms of your contract.
To find out the steps applicable to your situation, contact contact@etudassur.fr.
I want to cancel my contract (14-day cooling-off period)
The legal cooling-off period is 14 days from the date of subscription.
You can cancel your contract from your customer area if you are still within this period or contact contact@etudassur.fr with your contract number.
Refund within 14 working days.
🚫 Upon registration of the cancellation: all guarantees are terminated immediately. Certificates are no longer valid.
My contract is about to expire, how do I renew it?
Log in to your customer area at www.etudassur.fr and click on “renew my contract”.
Possible before the expiry date, with effect from the desired date.
⚠️ It is not possible to extend an existing contract by a few days. If you need additional coverage, the minimum duration is 3 months.
How do I cancel my contract?
Cancel from your customer area by submitting your move-out inventory. ⚠️ The cancellation takes effect upon receipt of the inventory, not on your departure date — submit it as soon as possible.
Note that your insurance contract is for a fixed term. It will expire automatically on the end date indicated on your certificates. No need to worry, no further payment will be requested.
Will I be refunded if I cancel before the end?
By default, an early departure from the accommodation does not entitle you to a refund of the remaining insurance period.
However, certain special situations may be reviewed by our teams, particularly in the event of a change in the type of accommodation or when a new contract is taken out with our group to insure another property.
These situations are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and do not automatically entitle you to a refund. The decision depends in particular on the reason for the request, the supporting documents provided and the contractual situation.
Can I cancel at any time?
As the contract is for a fixed term with no automatic renewal, it ends automatically at its term. No need to worry, no further payment will be requested.
Early cancellation is possible in certain cases (moving out, end of tenancy). The cancellation conditions and deadlines depend on the contract — to be checked.
What is the difference between cancellation and cooling-off?
Cooling-off and cancellation do not correspond to the same stage of the contract.
Cooling-off allows you to reconsider your subscription shortly after making it. For a contract taken out remotely, you generally have a period of 14 calendar days to withdraw from the contract, without having to justify your decision, subject to the conditions provided by the regulations.
Cancellation, on the other hand, concerns a contract already in progress. It consists of terminating it before its scheduled end date when the contractual or legal conditions allow it.
At Etudassur, home insurance contracts are taken out for a fixed term of 3, 6 or 12 months and are not automatically renewed. If you simply go up to the scheduled expiry date, you therefore do not need to cancel: the contract ends automatically.
In summary: cooling-off = reconsidering a recent subscription; cancellation = terminating a contract already in progress.
Renewal
How do I renew my contract?
Log in to your customer area on etudassur.fr using your credentials and follow the renewal process. Since the contract is non-renewable by default, renewal is a voluntary step on your part.
Is my contract automatically renewed?
No. The contract is for a fixed term with no automatic renewal: it ends automatically at its expiry date. Remember to renew it before the end date to avoid any interruption in coverage via your customer area.
⚠️ After the end date, you are no longer insured — which may cause issues regarding your residence.
I’m staying in the same accommodation next year—do I have to redo everything?
No, renewing via your customer area carries over your existing information — it’s quicker than a new subscription. Simply check that the details (accommodation, plan, duration) are up to date.
Guarantees & coverage
Is a blown bulb or routine maintenance issue covered?
No. Home insurance covers losses of accidental origin. A faulty bulb, peeling paint or any routine maintenance issue falls under the tenant’s obligations by law — not insurance. These situations do not constitute a loss.
How can I check if my cover is active on my contract?
To check the covers included in your home insurance, log in to your Etudassur customer area and consult your Policy Schedule.
It specifies the plan you have taken out as well as the covers, limits and excesses that apply.
Some covers depend on your plan:
-
CROUS: fire, water damage, natural disaster, weather events, tenant’s liability – personal liability, school and extracurricular activities as an option
-
Essentielle: basic covers, personal liability, assistance and glass breakage.
-
XXL: additional covers, including theft, lost keys, electrical damage, bedbugs and strike cover.
-
XXL + Bike: all XXL covers with bike theft cover.
Bike theft is therefore not covered by the standard XXL plan: it requires the XXL + Bike plan.
Before reporting a claim, check that the corresponding cover is listed in your Policy Schedule.
There was a transport strike on the day of my exam—am I covered?
Yes, if you have taken out the XXL or XXL + Bike plan and the strike affects a journey covered by your cover.
The Strike cover reimburses your taxi or private hire vehicle costs when you are prevented from attending a national exam or competitive exam due to a public transport strike.
The limit is €50 per cover period, with no excess.
To request compensation, keep:
-
your invitation to the national exam or competitive exam;
-
proof of the strike that affected your usual transport;
-
the invoice for your taxi or private hire vehicle.
Note: regular university exams, mock exams and resit sessions are not automatically covered. The cover applies to national exams and competitive exams under the conditions set out in the contract.
This cover is not included in the CROUS and Essentielle plans.
My electrical devices were damaged by a power surge—am I covered?
Yes, but only with the XXL plan. The Electrical Damage cover applies to damage caused by:
- A power surge due to lightning
- The direct action of electricity on electrical devices less than 10 years old and their power supply lines.
- Limit: €3,000, excess: €100
- Not covered: fuses, resistors and tubes of any kind. Standard breakdown without external electrical cause is not covered.
⚠️ Not included in the Essentielle and CROUS plans. Check your Policy Schedule before reporting a claim.
To prepare your claim, see our article on how to prove an electrical power surge. Read the article.
Are my jewellery, cash and valuables covered?
Etudassur home insurance policies do not cover valuables, works of art, jewellery, or cash, funds and securities.
The General Terms and Conditions specifically define valuables as:
-
jewellery, regardless of its value;
-
certain rugs, paintings, decorative objects, watches and other items exceeding the individual thresholds set out in the policy;
-
items other than everyday furniture with an individual value exceeding €2,000;
-
collections.
Works of art and valuables are excluded from Etudassur cover, in accordance with the Special Terms and Conditions.
If you own significant jewellery, collections or valuables, specific insurance may be required.
To find out exactly what is excluded, consult your General and Special Terms and Conditions.
What is civil liability and why is it important?
Civil liability (also known as CL) covers damage you cause to others: to rented accommodation (tenant’s liability) and to third parties in your daily life (personal liability), up to €10 million. This is the most important cover—without it, you would personally bear potentially very heavy costs (such as a fire spreading or water damage to a neighbour’s property).
Are my computer and phone covered?
Yes, office and IT equipment (including phones) is covered up to €2,000, at new-for-old value if the device is less than 2 years old. The device must be under 10 years old. Theft is only covered in plans that include theft cover (XXL).⚠️ If the device is under manufacturer’s warranty, contact the after-sales service first.
In an emergency (leak, door slammed shut), can I call a tradesperson myself?
In an emergency at your home, we recommend that you first contact Etudassur Assistance on 01 55 98 71 14, available 24/7.
Assistance can direct you to a professional or arrange an intervention according to the services provided for in your policy.
To benefit from an intervention covered under assistance, you must obtain their agreement before calling in a tradesperson.
If you contact a service provider yourself without this agreement, the costs incurred cannot be reimbursed under this assistance service.
However, there is an important distinction:
When it comes to repairing damage covered by your home insurance, such as broken glass, you can generally choose your own professional.
You must then report the claim and comply with any conditions set by the insurer before proceeding with repairs.
Cover depends on the guarantees you have taken out, the limits and the excesses applicable.
Are my bicycle and e-scooter covered?
The bicycle is covered against theft only under the XXL + Bike option (limit of €300, subject to lock conditions). The electric scooter is not covered—it requires specific mandatory insurance for motorised vehicles.
Is my home covered when I go on holiday?
Yes, your home remains insured even during prolonged absence. After 30 consecutive days of total unoccupancy, some cover may be conditional—notify support if you will be away for more than 30 days.
How does the bike theft option work (available with the XXL plan)?
The “bike” option is included exclusively in the XXL Etudassur plan. It is not included in the Essential or CROUS plans.
In what situations is my bike covered?
The cover applies in two situations:
1. Outside your residence:
Your bike is covered against theft when it is more than 100 metres from your home and secured to a fixed point with a U-lock or folding lock, securing both the frame and one wheel.
2. In the bike storage room of your residence:
Your bike is also covered if it is stolen from the bike storage room of your residence, provided it has been properly secured with a U-lock or folding lock.
What compensation is provided?
Compensation is based on the actual value of your bike, up to a limit of €300, with no excess.
What evidence must be provided?
In the event of theft, you must submit:
-
A police report filed with the authorities.
-
The purchase receipt for your bike, issued before the incident by an official retailer.
-
The purchase receipt for your compliant lock, also dated before the incident.
What are the exclusions?
The cover does not apply to rented or borrowed bikes, bikes that are not properly secured, or the isolated theft of bike parts (wheel, saddle or accessories).
To benefit from this cover, you must own the bike and have taken out the XXL plan with the “Bike” option.
Fire guarantee
What exactly does the fire cover include?
Fire cover includes material damage caused to your furniture by: fire (combustion with flames), explosion and implosion, accidental smoke, a direct lightning strike (excluding power surges), the impact of a vehicle or the fall of an aerial object, and the costs of rescue and emergency services following a covered loss.
💡 Fire cover is included in all Etudassur plans (CROUS, Essentielle, XXL).
Also check out our guide to good practices for preventing fires
Is a cigarette burn on my sofa covered as a fire?
No. Smoking-related accidents (burns or damage caused by heat or contact with a smouldering substance, such as a cigarette butt) are not considered a fire under the terms of the contract. A fire requires combustion with flames outside a normal hearth.
⚠️ Oxidation and fermentation, even with heat emission, are also excluded from fire cover.
How much will I be compensated in the event of a fire?
The limit depends on your plan, up to the insured personal property amount:
- CROUS: €4,500
- Essentielle: €6,000
- XXL: €7,500
- with a €100 excess.
Check your Policy Schedule for details.
How do I report a fire?
In the event of a loss due to a fire, report it within 5 working days via your customer area or at sinistre@etudassur.fr. Include:
- the fire brigade’s intervention report,
- the circumstances,
- JPEG photos of the damage,
- a list of damaged items with proof of ownership,
- and a repair estimate.
If the accommodation is uninhabitable, contact assistance (01.55.98.71.14) for emergency rehousing.
For more information, read our article on how to complete your fire loss report correctly
Is lightning that fries my appliances covered by fire cover?
A direct lightning strike is covered by fire cover, but power surge damage is not. For electrical damage caused by a lightning-induced power surge to your appliances, the Electrical Damage cover (XXL plan, limit €3,000) applies.
⚠️ The distinction is important: direct lightning = fire; electrical surge = electrical damage (XXL only).
If a fire in my home spreads to my neighbour’s, am I covered?
Yes. Your Neighbours and Third Parties Recourse cover (included in Tenant’s Liability, sub-limit €300,000) covers material and non-material damage caused to your neighbours by a fire that started in your home.
💡 Conversely, if the fire comes from a neighbour’s home, their own insurance should cover it—our team can take action on your behalf.
Water damage guarantee
What does the water damage cover include?
The water damage cover includes damage to your belongings caused by:
- accidental water leaks (plumbing, gutters, pipes),
- accidental seepage (roofs, terraces, sanitary seals),
- sewer backflow, humidity resulting from a covered loss, and freezing of the internal plumbing system.
- Damage caused by an identified third party (e.g. a leak from a neighbour) is also covered.
⚠️ Only accidental damage is covered. Non-accidental damage and maintenance are excluded.
Is the repair of the leak covered?
The Water Damage cover includes damage caused by an accidental leak, but not necessarily the repair of the leak itself.
It is important to distinguish between two elements:
1. The cause of the leak: generally not covered
The repair or replacement of the element causing the water damage is not covered by this cover.
For example:
-
Replacing a faulty seal.
-
Repairing a leaking pipe or drain.
-
Repairing a washing machine that caused a leak.
-
Unblocking a drain.
These interventions are the responsibility of maintenance or repair of the installation concerned and may be the responsibility of the tenant or the landlord, depending on the situation.
2. The consequences of the leak: potentially covered
If the accidental leak damages your personal belongings, the Water Damage cover may apply.
Concrete example: the pipe in your shower bursts and the water damages a piece of furniture and your personal belongings.
-
The repair of the pipe causing the leak is not covered by the Water Damage cover.
-
The damage to your furniture and belongings may be compensated, depending on the cover and conditions of your policy.
Good to know: the General Conditions provide specific provisions in the event of freezing of plumbing installations.
In the event of a leak, notify the manager of your residence quickly and report your claim to Etudassur, attaching photographs of the damage and any available supporting documents.
Why doesn’t my insurance cover damage to the accommodation (IRSI agreement)?
In the event of water damage or fire, not all damage is necessarily covered directly by your home insurance.
The IRSI agreement organises the management of claims between the various insurers involved: the tenant’s insurance, the landlord’s insurance, the building’s insurance or a neighbour’s insurance.
Thus, if the damage concerns your personal belongings or your liability as a tenant, your Etudassur policy may apply according to the cover provided. However, when the damage concerns the building or elements belonging to the landlord, their cover may be the responsibility of the landlord’s or building’s insurance, depending on the situation.
This does not therefore mean that the claim is not covered: it may simply need to be handled by another insurer.
💡 In case of doubt, always report your claim to Etudassur. The claims team will be able to tell you which insurer should intervene and the steps to take.
Also consult our guide on the IRSI agreement for tenants in student residences
Is damage caused by frozen pipes covered?
Yes. Damage to your belongings caused by freezing of the internal plumbing system is covered by the water damage cover. This is an exception: normally, damage to the internal plumbing system is excluded, except in the case of freezing.
💡 In winter, maintain minimal heating during prolonged absences to prevent pipes from freezing.
My neighbour caused water damage in my home — what happens next?
Etudassur compensates for damage for which an identified third party is responsible (for example, a neighbour who forgot to turn off a tap). Complete a joint water damage report signed by the responsible neighbour — this is the key document.
Our team can then take action against their insurance.
How do I report water damage?
In the event of water damage, start by limiting the damage: turn off the water supply if necessary, take photos and notify your residence, landlord or neighbour if they are involved.
Then report the claim to Etudassur within 5 working days, via your customer area or the claims service.
If another person is involved in the water damage, complete a joint water damage report with them.
To enable your file to be processed, prepare in particular:
- photos of the damage;
- the joint report, where necessary;
- proof of damaged items;
- the repair invoice for the source of the leak, if it has already been repaired.
💡 Do not wait until you have all the documents to report the claim: you can complete your file later.
Consult our guide to reporting your water damage now
Are leaks caused by damaged shower seals covered?
Maintaining shower seals is a tenant repair that is your responsibility, not a claim. Leaks through sanitary seals are only covered if they are accidental, not if they result from a lack of maintenance.
💡 Check your seals when moving in and report any already damaged seal in writing to the manager.
Is the repair of a leak covered?
No. The insurance covers damage caused by water (damaged furniture, etc.), but not the repair of the leak itself. In furnished accommodation, damage to the property often falls under the landlord’s insurance (IRSI agreement).
Civil liability guarantee
What is Civil Liability cover?
Civil Liability protects you when you accidentally cause damage to another person and your liability is engaged.
Depending on the cover provided by your Etudassur contract, it may intervene if you unintentionally cause:
- material damage to a third party;
- bodily injury to another person;
- certain types of damage in the context of your private life, studies or an internship.
Your contract also includes tenant’s liability, which covers your liability towards the landlord when you cause certain types of damage to the insured property, particularly following a fire or water damage.
⚠️ Civil Liability does not cover your own damage, intentional acts or, unless specifically covered, damage related to a professional activity.
💡 Example: if you accidentally cause water damage that affects your neighbour’s property, your Civil Liability may intervene depending on the circumstances and the cover provided by your contract.
Am I covered during my internships and at school?
Yes, your Etudassur student home insurance may cover you during your studies and internships, provided that the Private, School and Extracurricular Life Civil Liability cover is included in your contract.
1. At school or university
Your civil liability protects you if you accidentally cause damage to other people in the context of your school or extracurricular activities.
For example:
-
You accidentally break a classmate’s computer.
-
You damage equipment belonging to your institution.
-
You unintentionally injure another person during a school activity.
2. During your internships
You are also covered during professional internships organised as part of your studies by your school or university, whether they are paid or not.
Damage caused to property entrusted during these internships may be covered up to €300,000, under the conditions set out in the contract.
Please note: salaried professional activities, particularly in the context of a work-study programme, are not automatically covered by this cover. They generally fall under the employer’s professional insurance.
3. And abroad?
Your civil liability may also cover you during your studies or internships abroad, for stays of less than 3 months, depending on the conditions of your contract.
Check your plan:
-
CROUS: Private, School and Extracurricular Life Civil Liability is available as an option.
-
Essentielle, XXL and XXL + Vélo: this cover is included.
Good to know: you can download your Civil Liability certificate from your Étudassur customer area if you have taken out this cover.
This insurance covers your liability for damage caused to third parties, but does not constitute personal accident insurance covering your own injuries.
In what cases am I not held liable?
Your Civil Liability only applies if your liability is actually engaged.
You are therefore not automatically liable as soon as damage occurs. For example, your liability may not be held when:
- you have not committed any fault that caused the damage;
- the damage results exclusively from an external event that you could neither foresee nor avoid;
- the damage is due to the fault of a third party;
- the damage is caused by a defect in the property, equipment belonging to the landlord or a problem that is not your responsibility.
💡 Example: if a pipe belonging to the building bursts without any action on your part, your liability as a tenant is not necessarily engaged.
In the event of a claim, do not admit liability yourself: report the facts to Etudassur and provide the available information. The insurer will determine liability based on the circumstances of the claim.
What is the “Neighbours and Third Parties Recourse” cover?
This cover (sub-limit €300,000) protects you for damage caused to your neighbours or third parties originating from your home — typically a fire or water damage that starts in your home and spreads to the neighbour below.
Is damage caused by my pet covered by Civil Liability?
Yes. The private life Civil Liability of your Etudassur contract may cover damage caused to a third party by your domestic pet.
The cover applies to domestic pets that belong to you, even when they are entrusted free of charge to another person, as well as to animals that are themselves entrusted to you free of charge.
For example, if your dog accidentally injures a person or damages a third party’s property, your Civil Liability may intervene depending on the circumstances of the claim.
Note: category 1 and 2 dogs as well as wild animals, whether tamed or not, are not covered by this cover.
💡 Veterinary fees related to the examination of your dog after a bite on a third party are also provided for in the contract.
Is my professional activity covered by third-party liability insurance?
Etudassur’s Personal Third-Party Liability insurance covers accidental damage you may cause to third parties in your personal life, according to the guarantees subscribed.
It does not automatically cover damage caused in the course of your professional activity, including when you work from home.
Special provisions are, however, made for work placements organised by your school or university.
If you are a salaried employee working remotely, your home remains insured against events covered by your home insurance contract. However, your professional liability and equipment provided by your employer may fall under their insurance policies.
You can generate a remote working certificate from your customer area. This certifies the insurance of your home but does not constitute professional third-party liability insurance.
Are my solicitor’s fees covered in the event of a dispute?
Yes, certain solicitor’s fees may be covered by your Etudassur contract under the “Defence Costs” guarantee.
This cover applies only when a dispute is related to damage covered by your Third-Party Liability guarantee.
It may cover fees and charges for solicitors, experts, investigations and legal proceedings.
⚠️ These costs must have been incurred with the insurer’s prior written agreement. This is not a general legal protection that covers any dispute.
Costs are covered within the limits set by your contract.
Theft & vandalism guarantee
What conditions must I meet for my theft to be covered?
The Theft/Vandalism guarantee (XXL plan) is subject to strict conditions set out in the Special Conditions: The theft must have been committed following:
- A clear break-in (forcing, damaging a lock),
- An assault,
- The use of a false identity to gain entry to the premises
Absolute condition in case of absence: all windows and doors of your home must have been properly closed and locked.
🚫 If a window or door was open or not locked: the guarantee will not apply, regardless of the situation.
⚠️ Terraces, gardens and balconies are excluded from the theft guarantee. Theft in common areas is not covered.
💡 In case of theft with break-in: photograph the damage immediately, file a police report within 24 hours, and report it within 2 working days via your customer area.
Is theft in my home covered?
Yes, but only under the XXL and XXL + Bike plans (from €6.08/month). The guarantee covers theft, attempted theft and vandalism of your personal effects and furniture, committed inside the home following: a clear break-in, an assault, or the use of a false identity.
⚠️ Standard home insurance does not automatically include theft cover — it is not a mandatory guarantee. Check your plan.
What condition must I meet when absent to be covered?
When absent, all windows and doors of your home must have been properly closed and locked. Otherwise, the guarantees will not apply, even if a clear break-in occurred elsewhere.
🚫 Terraces, gardens and balconies are excluded from the theft guarantee.
Is the theft of my keys or documents outside covered?
Yes, through the Theft from the Person guarantee (XXL plan, limit €200, excess €50). It covers the loss of your identity documents and keys carried on you, during a theft outside the home involving violence or threats, or following a force majeure event. Valid worldwide for stays of less than 3 months.
In case of document theft, also consult our guide on steps to take after a wallet theft. Read the article.
What is not covered by the theft warranty?
Excluded are: furniture in common areas, valuables and computer equipment in outbuildings/conservatories, cash and jewellery, damage to common areas, graffiti and tags. Thefts committed by an insured person or their flatmates are also excluded.
Bicycle theft guarantee
Does my policy cover my electric scooter?
No. Our home insurance policies do not cover electric scooters. There are specific insurance policies for PMVs (personal light electric vehicles).
Is my bicycle covered against theft?
Yes, under the XXL + Bike plan only, up to €300, with no excess. The theft must have occurred: either more than 100 metres from your home with a U-lock or folding lock securing the frame and wheel to a fixed point, or in the bike storage room of your residence with the same type of lock.
⚠️ Partial theft (wheel, saddle, accessories) is not covered. The bike must be locked — a bike that is not locked when stolen is never compensated.
What documents are required to be compensated for a stolen bike?
In the event of your bike being stolen, you will need to provide, in particular:
- the police report filed with the authorities;
- the purchase invoice for the bike, issued before the incident by an official retailer;
- the purchase invoice for the lock that meets the contract conditions, also dated before the theft.
For the cover to apply, the bike must have been properly locked with a U-lock or folding lock, as specified in your contract.
Compensation is provided up to the guaranteed amount and based on the bike’s value according to the terms set out in the contract.
⚠️ Proof of value issued after the theft is not accepted.
Are my rented bike or scooter covered?
No. The cover only applies to the bike you own. Rented or borrowed bikes are not covered. The electric scooter is explicitly excluded from Etudassur contracts — it requires specific insurance (mandatory for motorised vehicles).
How can I add bike cover to my policy?
The Bike Theft cover is an option available with the XXL plan from Etudassur.
For just €15 extra, you can protect your bike against theft up to €300, with no excess, subject to the terms of the contract.
To benefit from this, select the XXL + Bike option when you take out your policy.
This cover is not available with the Essential plan.
If you already have an XXL policy, contact our team at contact@etudassur.fr to check the options for adding this cover.
Glass breakage guarantee
My window is broken: do I have to go through the assistance service to have it replaced?
No, not necessarily. It depends on the nature of your request.
If your situation requires emergency intervention:
For example, if your window is broken and your home can no longer be secured, you can contact the home assistance service to arrange the urgent intervention of a glazier.
To benefit from coverage under the assistance service, you must contact it before the professional’s intervention.
If you want to have a damaged window replaced:
The replacement may be covered by the broken glass coverage in your home insurance policy, if the damage is included.
In this case, you must report your claim to the insurer and comply with the coverage terms set out in the policy.
You can generally choose your own glazier, subject to any necessary validations before repairs.
Compensation will be assessed according to the coverages, limits and excesses specified in your policy.
In summary: you are not required to go through the assistance service to benefit from your broken glass coverage. However, if you want to benefit from an emergency intervention covered by the assistance service, you must contact it beforehand.
What does the glass breakage cover include?
The cover includes accidental breakage of windows, French windows, bay windows, balcony partition glazing, skylights, conservatories, and glazed parts of solar panels.
In the extended (XXL) plan, it also covers glass and mirrors in furniture, aquariums, ceramic glass cooktops, and ceramic elements of sanitary appliances.
💡 In the XXL plan, the excess is €0 — compensation without excess, subject to the limits.
Is glass breakage included in all plans?
No.
Glass breakage cover is included in the Essential and XXL plans, but it is not included in the CROUS plan.
With the Essential plan, glass breakage is covered up to the limit set in the contract, with an excess of €100.
The XXL plan benefits from extended glass breakage cover, with a limit matching the personal property capital of the plan and no excess.
💡 The XXL + Bike plan includes the same covers as the XXL plan: it therefore also benefits from extended glass breakage cover.
How do I report glass breakage?
Report it within 5 days (2 days if caused by an attempted break-in) via your customer area or by email at sinistre@etudassur.fr.
Specify the circumstances (causes, how it happened, damage), add photos, and attach the repair quote in your name.
💡 Three repair options: a partner tradesperson from the assistance service, carry out the work yourself with prior approval, or a tradesperson of your choice (quote in your name).
For more details, consult our dedicated guide on reporting home glass breakage. Read the article.
What is not covered by glass breakage?
Exclusions include: scratches, chips and flaking, damage to silvering and paintwork, breakage of removed or dismantled glass, and portable glass, stained glass, chandeliers, light bulbs, neon lights, and glassware items.
Is my broken ceramic glass cooktop covered?
In the XXL plan, the extended glass breakage cover may include ceramic glass cooktops, under the conditions set out in the contract. This extension is not included in the Essential or CROUS plans.
Natural disasters guarantee
Am I covered in the event of a natural disaster?
Yes, natural disaster cover is included in all plans. It covers direct material damage caused by the abnormal intensity of a natural agent (flooding, drought, etc.).
Condition: it can only be activated after publication in the Journal Officiel of an interministerial order declaring a state of natural disaster.
⚠️ A statutory excess of €380 applies (€1,520 for ground movements linked to drought).
What is the difference between a natural disaster and a climatic event?
A climatic event and a natural disaster are not covered in the same way.
A climatic event corresponds to certain meteorological phenomena directly provided for in your Etudassur contract, such as a storm, hail, the weight of snow or ice, or certain floods. The cover may apply as soon as the conditions set out in the contract are met.
A natural disaster, on the other hand, corresponds to a natural event of abnormal intensity. For this cover to apply, the state of natural disaster must have been officially recognised by a decree published in the Journal officiel.
💡 Example: damage caused by a severe storm may fall under the “Climatic Events” cover. However, certain exceptional damage linked to flooding, ground movement or another natural phenomenon may fall under the natural disasters regime when an official decree is published.
How do I report a natural disaster claim?
If your home has suffered damage following an event that may be recognised as a natural disaster, start by taking photos, keeping the damaged items where possible and taking the necessary steps to prevent the damage from worsening.
Then report the claim to Etudassur, specifying:
- the date and circumstances of the claim;
- the nature of the damage observed;
- the damaged items;
- their estimated value, together with invoices, quotes, photos or other supporting documents available.
For the “Natural Disasters” cover to apply, your municipality must be the subject of a decree recognising the state of natural disaster, published in the Journal officiel.
You must report the claim as soon as you become aware of it and at the latest within 30 days of the publication of this decree.
💡 Do not wait until you have gathered all the supporting documents before contacting Etudassur: your file can be completed later.
To find out the steps and supporting documents required, consult our guide to reporting a natural disaster claim. Read the article.
What is not covered by climatic events?
Excluded are: damage caused by seas and oceans, rising water tables, subsidence and landslides, mudslides (falling under natural disasters). Damage to buildings under reconstruction is also excluded.
Is rain damage after a storm covered?
Yes, water damage to your furniture caused by rain, snow or hail accompanying or following a storm is covered, provided the building has been damaged and the damage appeared within 48 hours of the storm.
Bedbug disinfection guarantee
Should I contact assistance before calling in a professional to treat bedbugs?
No. Bedbug treatment is covered under your home insurance policy, not emergency assistance services.
You are free to choose your provider, as long as you use a certified professional.
Coverage remains subject to the terms and limits of your policy, including a two-month waiting period.
Important: this freedom of choice does not apply to emergency interventions covered by home assistance (plumbing, locksmithing, glazing and electrical work). For these services, you must contact assistance before any intervention so that the provider is either appointed or approved by their team.
What is a waiting period in home insurance?
The waiting period is a time during which certain coverages in your home insurance policy are not yet applicable, even though your policy has already taken effect.
For example, the bedbug coverage includes a 2-month waiting period. This means you must wait until this period has expired before you can benefit from this coverage.
When does the waiting period for my home insurance start?
The waiting period generally starts from the effective date of your insurance policy, unless otherwise specified in the contractual terms.
For example, if your home insurance takes effect on 1 September and the bedbug coverage includes a 2-month waiting period, this coverage becomes applicable from 1 November.
Any claims occurring during the waiting period are not covered by the relevant coverage, even if the claim is reported after the waiting period has expired.
Claims
Can I be compensated on the basis of a quote or must I provide an invoice?
With Étudassur, compensation for your claim can be made on the basis of a quote, without waiting for the repairs to be carried out or providing a paid invoice.
After reporting your claim, you can submit a quote from the professional of your choice. If the claim is covered, the insurer will review your request and determine the amount of compensation according to the terms of your policy (coverages, limits and any excesses).
Exception: in the case of lost keys and bedbug extermination, a paid invoice is required to obtain reimbursement of the costs incurred. A simple quote is therefore not sufficient in these two cases.
I have water damage but my home insurance won’t cover the damage to the property — why?
In the event of water damage in your student residence, several insurance policies may be involved: your Etudassur home insurance, the landlord’s insurance, the residence’s insurance or even a neighbour’s insurance.
The cover depends in particular on the origin of the claim, the nature of the damage, the responsibilities involved and the agreements applicable between insurers.
What is the role of the IRSI agreement?
The IRSI agreement organises the management of certain water damage and fire claims in buildings. It determines which insurer handles the case and under what conditions.
In a furnished student residence, damage affecting elements belonging to the landlord may be covered by the landlord’s insurance or the building’s insurance, depending on the circumstances.
Your Etudassur contract may cover damage to your personal belongings and, when your liability is involved, under the civil liability cover.
The fact that a particular insurance policy does not directly cover repairs does not necessarily mean that the damage is not compensable.
What should you do in practice?
Notify your residence manager, take photos of the damage and report the claim to Etudassur.
If several people or properties are affected, complete a water damage amicable report where possible.
Our claims service will review your situation and direct you to the insurer likely to intervene.
How do I report a claim?
In the event of a claim, report it to Etudassur as soon as possible, specifying the date, circumstances and nature of the damage.
Also remember to:
- take photos of the damage (JPEG photos only — the HEIC format (iPhone) is not accepted by the company);
- take the necessary steps to prevent the damage from worsening;
- keep the damaged items where possible;
- gather invoices, quotes and other supporting documents useful for compensation.
For damage to property, the claim must be reported within 5 days of the time you become aware of it. However, specific deadlines may apply to certain claims, particularly in the event of theft or natural disaster.
After reporting your claim, send Etudassur an estimated statement of the damage together with the available supporting documents. Additional documents may be requested during the processing of your file.
💡 Do not wait until you have gathered all the supporting documents before reporting your claim: you can complete your file later.

I have water damage — what should I do?
If you experience water damage in your accommodation, here are the steps to follow.
1. Limit the damage
Turn off the water supply if necessary and take possible measures to prevent the damage from worsening, without putting yourself in danger.
2. Notify the relevant parties
Inform the manager of your residence, your landlord or your neighbour if the water damage may affect them.
3. Take photographs
Photograph the damage as well as the source of the leak, when identifiable.
4. Report your claim
Submit your claim within 5 working days of becoming aware of the damage, directly from your Etudassur customer area or by contacting the claims service at sinistre@etudassur.fr.
5. Submit the available supporting documents
Depending on your situation, the following documents may be requested:
-
A friendly water damage report when a third party is involved.
-
Photographs of the damage.
-
A list of damaged items and their purchase receipts.
-
A repair or replacement estimate.
-
The repair invoice for the source of the leak, if it has already been fixed.
Good to know: Do not wait until you have gathered all the supporting documents to submit your claim. You can complete your file later.
The repair of the equipment causing the leak is not necessarily covered, even when the water damage is covered.
Burglary or break-in at my accommodation, what should I do?
In the event of burglary, attempted burglary or break-in at your accommodation:
- Do not touch the premises unnecessarily before the police have carried out their inspection;
- Take photos of any signs of forced entry and the damage observed;
- Make a list of stolen or damaged items;
- File a police report within 24 hours;
- Then report the claim to Etudassur as soon as possible.
Keep and submit all available supporting documents: police report, purchase receipts, photos, repair estimates, proof of value of the items and any evidence establishing the circumstances of the burglary.
If a door, lock or window has been damaged, take the necessary steps to temporarily secure the accommodation and prevent the damage from worsening.
💡 The Theft – Vandalism cover depends on the policy taken out and the circumstances of the burglary. Forced entry, assault or certain other situations provided for in the contract may, in particular, allow it to be applied.
I have caused damage to my neighbour or my accommodation, what should I do?
If you have accidentally caused damage to your accommodation or that of a neighbour, notify the relevant parties and report the claim to Etudassur as soon as possible.
Remember to:
- Take photos of the damage;
- Specify the exact circumstances of the claim;
- Take the necessary steps to prevent the damage from worsening;
- Keep invoices, estimates and other useful supporting documents.
If you are responsible for damage caused to the accommodation you rent, your Tenant’s Liability cover may apply depending on the circumstances and the cover provided by your policy.
If the damage has also affected a neighbour or another third party, the “Neighbours and Third Parties” cover may cover the financial consequences of your liability.
💡 Example: If water damage from your accommodation damages the flat below, report the claim to Etudassur and inform your neighbour so that the relevant insurers can arrange for it to be dealt with.
What is the status of my claim?
To track a claim you have already reported, contact the claims service directly at sinistre@etudassur.fr and provide:
- Your policy number;
- Your claim reference number, if you have already received it;
- And, if necessary, the document or information you wish to submit.
You can also contact the claims service on 03 22 53 45 51 during office hours.
💡 Average time to resolve a claim: 15 to 30 days.
The seals in my shower are damaged and causing leaks — who pays?
This is a major source of poorly understood disputes.
The rule is clear: maintaining the seals in the shower is the tenant’s responsibility (minor repairs, decree of 26 August 1987). This is not accidental damage — it is normal wear and tear.
What this means:
- Repairing faulty seals: not covered by home insurance — this is routine maintenance;
- Damage caused to the neighbour below via a leak: your Tenant’s Liability cover may apply — but only if you are not at fault due to gross negligence;
- Damage in your own accommodation due to your poorly maintained seals: claim will be rejected.
💡 Best practice: Check your seals when you move in and report in writing (email) any seal that is already damaged to the manager. This protects you in the event of a subsequent claim.
⚠️ For managers: A seal that was damaged before the tenant moved in and was not mentioned in the inventory of fixtures is the landlord’s responsibility, not the tenant’s.
My accommodation has mould — is this a covered claim?
The presence of mould in your accommodation is not automatically considered a covered claim.
If the mould results from a long-term issue with damp, condensation or poor maintenance, it generally does not fall under the Water Damage cover.
However, if it is the direct result of an accidental event covered by your policy — such as a leak or infiltration that is covered — the resulting damage may be covered according to the terms of the contract.
In any case, notify your landlord or residence promptly to identify and address the source of the damp.
💡 If you believe the mould appeared following water damage, take photos and contact Etudassur so that the situation can be assessed.
I’ve been robbed in the street—am I covered?
This depends on your plan and the circumstances of the theft.
If your contract includes the “Theft from the person” cover, it may apply when you are the victim of a theft or attempted theft outside your home:
- with violence or threat of violence;
- or following certain force majeure events, such as fainting, loss of consciousness or a road accident.
This cover applies to the papers and keys of your home that you were carrying at the time of the theft. It does not automatically cover all your personal belongings.
In the event of theft, report it quickly to the police or gendarmerie and notify Etudassur of the claim.
💡 The “Theft from the person” cover is included in the XXL plan, subject to the limits and conditions set out in the contract.
My computer is damaged—how is the claim handled?
Your computer may be compensated if it has been damaged as a result of an event covered by your Étudassur home insurance contract.
This may include a fire, water damage or another insured event.
Please note: a computer damaged as a result of a fall or accidental impact is not automatically covered. The circumstances must correspond to a cover that you have actually taken out.
How is compensation calculated?
The Essential and XXL plans provide compensation for office and IT equipment, including computers and phones, up to the contractual limit of €2,000.
For devices less than two years old, compensation for the new value is provided under the terms of the contract.
For older devices, depreciation may be applied.
To report the claim, provide the precise circumstances, photos of the damage, the purchase invoice and any supporting documents requested by the claims handler.
My home is uninhabitable following a claim—can I be rehoused?
Yes, if your home becomes uninhabitable following an insured event, temporary accommodation and coverage of certain rehousing costs may be provided depending on your plan.
Étudassur Assistance can arrange temporary accommodation if you can no longer stay in your home (up to a maximum of €750).
In addition, the home insurance contract provides a “Rehousing costs” cover:
- up to €150 with the Essential plan;
- up to €250 with the XXL plan;
- with no excess.
This cover applies in addition to the temporary accommodation provided by the assistance contract, subject to the conditions set out in the contract.
⚠️ In an emergency, contact Étudassur Assistance before incurring any rehousing costs or calling in a service provider. Any expense incurred without prior agreement from the assistance service may not be reimbursed.
💡 If your home has become uninhabitable following a fire, water damage or another insured event, contact Etudassur or the assistance service immediately to arrange the appropriate solution.
My claim is old—can I still report it?
Yes, you can still report an old claim, but it is best to do so as soon as possible.
The reporting deadlines set out in the contract should normally be respected. However, a delay in reporting does not automatically result in the loss of your cover: the insurer must be able to demonstrate that this delay has caused them prejudice.
You will need to provide as much information as possible to establish the date, circumstances and extent of the claim: photos, invoices, quotes, correspondence with your landlord or residence, reports or any other available supporting documents.
⚠️ There is also a limitation period: in principle, actions related to the insurance contract are time-barred after two years from the event that gave rise to them. However, certain situations may modify or interrupt this period.
💡 Even if your claim dates back several weeks or months, contact Etudassur so that your situation can be assessed.
It’s my neighbour’s fault—can we take action against them?
Yes. When a third party’s liability is identified, our firm can initiate an amicable claim with their insurer.
Conditions:
- Clearly identify the person responsible and their insurer
- Have evidence (amicable report, expert report, witness statements)
- Act within the 2-year time limit
💡 The amicable report signed by both parties is the key document to initiate the claim. Without Legal Protection cover, the claim remains amicable only.
I’ve suffered a fire—what is covered?
In the event of a fire in your home, your Etudassur contract may cover damage to your insured belongings, subject to the limits and conditions of your plan.
The “Fire and related events” cover includes damage to your furniture caused by:
- a fire;
- an explosion or implosion;
- accidental smoke;
- a direct lightning strike;
- rescue measures and emergency services intervention following the claim.
Compensation for your furniture is limited to the sum insured under your plan, and an excess may apply.
If the claim renders your home uninhabitable, temporary accommodation and rehousing costs may also be provided under your contract.
💡 After a fire, contact Etudassur quickly, take photos of the damage and keep any damaged belongings as well as your invoices and proof of purchase.
To prepare your file, also see our guide on reporting a fire claim.
I’ve paid for the repair of my leak—why isn’t the insurance reimbursing me?
The Water Damage cover mainly applies to the damage caused by the leak, but not necessarily to the repair of the equipment that caused it.
For example, if a pipe, tap or appliance leaks, your insurance may cover the damage caused to your belongings by the water, depending on the terms of your contract. However, the repair or replacement of the pipe, installation or appliance that caused the leak may remain your responsibility or that of your landlord.
The Étudassur General Conditions specifically exclude damage to the internal plumbing system and connected appliances when they are themselves the cause of the claim.
💡 Example: your washbasin hose breaks and the water damages your furniture. The water damage may be covered, but the replacement of the hose itself is not necessarily included.
If in doubt, keep the repair invoice and submit it with your claim: it may help to prove that the source of the leak has been properly repaired.
I’ve locked myself out—how do I call a covered locksmith?
In case of a slammed door or lost keys: contact the assistance service (01.55.98.71.14) BEFORE calling a locksmith. The assistance service will send an approved locksmith. Limit: €150.
🚫 Absolute rule: any intervention by a locksmith called without going through the assistance service will not be reimbursed—even with the invoice. This is a condition of cover, not a question of amount.
💡 Save the assistance number 01.55.98.71.14 in your phone now—it appears on your membership certificate and in your customer area.
How soon must I report my claim?
Report your claim to Étudassur as soon as possible after becoming aware of it.
The time limits set out in your contract are as follows:
- 5 days for damage to property, such as water damage, fire or broken glass;
- 2 days in case of theft, with a police report filed within 24 hours;
- 15 days for a claim relating to your Civil Liability;
- in case of theft or attempted theft, you must also file a police report within 24 hours.
Specific time limits may apply to certain events, particularly in the case of a natural disaster.
💡 Do not wait until you have gathered all the supporting documents to report your claim: your file can be completed later.
In what format should I send my photos and documents?
Send your photos in JPEG format. HEIC files (default on iPhone) and WeTransfer links are not accepted by the claims handler and will delay processing.
💡 On iPhone: Settings → Camera → Formats → “Most Compatible” to save in JPEG.
Will I have to pay the costs upfront? How soon will I be reimbursed?
With Étudassur, some claims may be settled on presentation of a quote, without waiting for the work to be carried out or the invoice to be paid.
After reporting your claim, the claims handler will review your file and check the applicable cover, limits, excesses and supporting documents submitted.
If your request is accepted, compensation may be paid based on the quote approved by the insurer.
Two types of cover, however, require a paid invoice:
-
Lost keys: reimbursement is made after the keys have been replaced and the paid invoice has been presented.
-
Bedbugs: reimbursement is made after your home has been treated by a certified professional and their paid invoice has been presented.
In these two situations, a quote alone is not sufficient to obtain compensation.
Once the amount of compensation has been agreed, payment will be made within the time limits set out in the contract, specifically within 30 days maximum following the amicable agreement.
⚠️ If your situation involves assistance (locksmith, plumber, glazier, etc.), always contact the assistance service before calling a provider yourself.
If you need assistance, contact the claims service at sinistre@etudassur.fr.
How can I track the progress of my claim?
After you report your claim, it will be handled by the Étudassur claims service.
To track its progress, you can contact the claims service, providing your policy number and, if available, your claim reference.
Depending on the stage of progress, the team can tell you:
- whether your report has been properly recorded;
- whether additional supporting documents are required;
- whether your file is under review;
- whether the amount of compensation has been approved;
- or whether payment has been initiated.
💡 Make sure to submit any requested additional documents promptly: an incomplete file may slow down processing.
Do I need to fill out an amicable settlement report for water damage?
Yes, as soon as a neighbour is involved. The amicable settlement report for water damage, signed by both parties, is the key document to identify the responsible party and enable claims between insurance companies.
Need help filling it out? Consult our step-by-step guide on the amicable settlement report for water damage.
In what format should I send my photos for a claim?
In JPEG format only.
HEIC files (default format for iPhones) and WeTransfer links are systematically rejected by the company — your file cannot progress until the photos are in the correct format.
How to convert an HEIC file to JPEG on iPhone: Settings → Camera → Formats → select “Most Compatible” (JPEG). Or when sharing: select the photos → Share → the photos are automatically converted to JPEG.
For supporting documents: send the files directly as an email attachment or upload them to your customer area — no external sharing links.
💡 Enable “Most Compatible” in your iPhone settings now — before you need to report a claim.
In whose name should the quote for a claim be made?
To request compensation under your Étudassur home insurance policy, the quote should generally be made in the name of the insured when the works or goods concerned fall directly under their contract.
It must specify:
-
the name of the insured;
-
the address of the property concerned;
-
the nature of the repairs or replacements;
-
the breakdown of amounts;
-
the professional’s contact details.
However, when the repairs concern elements belonging to the landlord or the residence and fall under their own insurance, the terms may differ.
In case of doubt, particularly in the event of water damage involving several insurers, contact the claims service before having your quote amended.
When and how should I send my bank details for reimbursement?
As part of a claim declaration, your claims handler may request a bank account statement in order to proceed with the payment of your compensation.
We recommend that you wait until your claims handler requests this document and provides you with information regarding the handling of your file.
Your bank account statement must be legible and include the necessary banking details for payment.
Submitting this document allows the bank account for the compensation payment to be identified.
The acceptance of the compensation amount and any payment terms must be assessed according to the exchanges with your claims handler and the conditions applicable to your file.
For any questions regarding your compensation, contact sinistre@etudassur.fr.
⚠️ Required format: a standard bank account statement (with the bank’s logo), not just a screenshot of the IBAN.
Assistance & emergencies
What is the difference between emergency assistance and a claim covered by my home insurance?
Your Étudassur home insurance policy distinguishes between two types of coverage.
Home assistance in an emergency:
This allows for the quick intervention of a professional in the event of a problem requiring urgent action, particularly in plumbing, locksmithing, glazing or electrical work.
To benefit from this service, you must contact the assistance service before any intervention. The professional must be appointed or approved by the assistance service.
If you call in a provider on your own initiative without prior agreement, their intervention cannot be reimbursed under the assistance service.
Your home insurance coverages:
These cover damages included in your policy, for example following water damage or broken glass.
In this case, you can generally freely choose the professional responsible for the repairs, subject to the conditions set out in the policy and any claims validation requirements from the insurer.
Compensation then depends on the coverages taken out, the evidence provided and any applicable excesses and limits.
Remember: the obligation to use a provider appointed by the assistance service applies to assistance services and does not automatically apply to repairs compensated under the coverages of your home insurance policy.
What is assistance and when should I call it?
Étudassur Assistance is a service available 24/7 to support you in certain urgent situations related to your accommodation.
It can intervene in cases such as a blocked door, broken window, electrical problem, water leak, or when your accommodation becomes uninhabitable following a covered claim.
Depending on the nature of your problem, assistance may offer several services:
1. Putting you in touch with a professional
Assistance can provide the contact details of a plumber, locksmith, glazier, or electrician near your accommodation.
Please note: this search service does not mean that the work is financially covered. The professional’s fees may remain your responsibility.
2. Covered emergency intervention
In situations covered by the contract, assistance can organise and fund certain temporary repairs for locksmithing, glazing, or electrical work, up to €150 including VAT (maximum 1 hour of labour).
3. Temporary accommodation
If your accommodation becomes uninhabitable following a covered event, assistance can organise and cover temporary accommodation, up to €150 including VAT per night and €750 including VAT per event.
For any assistance request, contact 01 55 98 71 14 before incurring any expenses.
The services and their conditions are outlined in the assistance notice provided with your contract.
I’m locked out — what should I do?
Step 1 — Call assistance immediately (number on your membership certificate/customer area). Do not look for a locksmith yourself. Assistance will send you an approved locksmith. Coverage is capped at €150.
Step 2 — If necessary, declare the claim afterwards from your customer area (key loss cover, XXL plan only).
⚠️ Key loss cover is not included in the Essential plan. Check your plan before declaring.
🚫 Absolute rule: any intervention by a locksmith called without going through assistance will not be reimbursed — even with the invoice. This is a condition of cover, not a question of amount.
💡 Tip: photograph your membership certificate as soon as you subscribe and save the assistance number in your contacts.
I have an urgent water leak — what should I do in an emergency?
In the event of a major water leak, act immediately to limit the damage:
-
turn off the water supply if you can do so safely;
-
move your belongings and electrical appliances away from the affected area;
-
take photos of the damage;
-
notify your residence, landlord or neighbour if the leak may affect them.
If your contract includes assistance, contact them at 01 55 98 71 14 before calling a plumber yourself. The assistance service can guide you and arrange the appropriate intervention.
⚠️ An intervention carried out by a contractor of your own choosing, without prior agreement from the assistance service, may not be reimbursed.
Once the emergency is under control, report the water damage to Etudassur and keep all relevant documents for your file: photos, quotes, amicable report and any supporting evidence.
💡 The most important thing is first to stop or limit the leak: the claim declaration can be completed later.
My accommodation is inaccessible tonight — how can I be rehoused?
If your accommodation is inaccessible or cannot be occupied tonight following a covered loss or incident, contact Étudassur assistance immediately at 01 55 98 71 14.
Assistance is available 24/7 and may, depending on the situation and the terms of your contract, arrange temporary accommodation.
⚠️ Do not incur hotel or rehousing expenses yourself without first contacting assistance. Any expense incurred without their agreement may not be reimbursed.
If your accommodation remains unusable after the emergency, additional rehousing costs may also be covered by your contract depending on the plan you have chosen.
💡 Call assistance as soon as you know you will not be able to stay in your accommodation: they will be able to tell you immediately what to do.
How can I contact the assistance and claims team?
For any questions regarding your Etudassur home insurance, several services are available.
In case of emergency — 24/7 Assistance

From abroad: +33 1 55 98 71 14
Email: oquotidien@mutuaide.fr.
This service is for assistance requests related to emergencies such as locksmith, glazing, electrical issues or covered rehousing needs.
🚫 Important: in case of emergency, always call assistance before contacting a contractor yourself. Any intervention arranged without prior agreement from assistance cannot be reimbursed.
To report or follow up on a claim
During office hours:
Telephone: 03 22 53 45 51
Email: sinistre@etudassur.fr
You can also report your claim from your customer area and submit your supporting documents: Customer Area → “Report a claim” → add your supporting documents
For any questions about your contract
Telephone: 01 80 48 14 72
Email: contact@etudassur.fr
Remember to include your contract number in the subject line of your email.
I called a locksmith myself and I am not being reimbursed, why?
Any intervention by a contractor called without going through assistance (01.55.98.71.14) is not reimbursable, even with an invoice. This is a condition of the contract. In future, always call assistance FIRST in case of an emergency — they will send an approved tradesperson with controlled rates.
Assistance guarantee
Why must I call assistance BEFORE having a tradesperson intervene?
In case of an emergency, we recommend that you contact Etudassur assistance at 01 55 98 71 14 before having a tradesperson intervene.
This step is essential to benefit from the assistance services covered under your contract.
Assistance can arrange an emergency intervention or put you in touch with a professional. Please note: simply being put in touch does not mean that the work will be financially covered.
If you have a professional intervene on your own initiative, without prior agreement, their fees cannot be reimbursed under the relevant assistance service.
However, if the repairs fall under a damage guarantee in your home insurance, the rules are different.
For example, in the case of a covered broken window, you can generally choose your own contractor, subject to reporting the claim and complying with any conditions set by the insurer.
It is therefore important to distinguish between assistance services and compensation related to a claim covered by your home insurance.
Does assistance cover my rehousing if my accommodation is uninhabitable?
Yes. The Temporary Accommodation cover under assistance arranges and covers accommodation (hotel, apartment, guesthouse) if your home becomes uninhabitable due to a covered event: €150/night, up to a maximum of €750 per event, including breakfast. ⚠️ Meals and other expenses remain at your own cost.
How much does assistance cover for a locksmith or glazier?
The intervention of a locksmith, electrician or glazier for temporary repairs (securing the accommodation) is covered up to €150. This also applies in the event of lost or stolen keys, or if you are locked out.
Is there a time limit for requesting assistance?
Yes. Any request for assistance made more than 30 days after the event will not be acted upon. For emergencies, call immediately — that is the whole point of assistance.
What other types of assistance are available?
In addition to emergency home interventions, Étudassur assistance may offer several services depending on your situation and the terms of your contract.
It may include, in particular:
- finding and putting you in touch with approved tradespeople;
- temporary accommodation if your home becomes uninhabitable;
- an emergency kit after a loss;
- the transfer of your furniture when the accommodation can no longer be occupied;
- an early return in certain situations;
- various personal assistance services.
These services complement the standard interventions by locksmiths, plumbers, glaziers or electricians.
⚠️ The conditions, durations and limits of cover depend on the service and are specified in the assistance terms of your contract.
💡 In case of urgent need, contact assistance on 01 55 98 71 14 before incurring any expenses yourself.
Travel, Erasmus & abroad
Am I covered if I stay abroad?
Your Étudassur home insurance policy may provide certain cover during a stay abroad. However, it does not replace comprehensive travel insurance.
1. Your personal belongings: Travel-Stay cover
The Essential, XXL and XXL + Bike plans include Travel-Stay cover.
This covers, under the terms of the contract, personal belongings you take with you during a stay of less than 3 months in a building, hotel or boarding house that you do not own.
This cover may apply in the event of fire, water damage or insured theft.
Compensation limit: €600, with an excess of €100.
Thefts committed outside buildings or in shared premises are excluded, in particular.
2. Your civil liability abroad
If you have Private Life Civil Liability cover, this may also protect you during a stay of less than 3 months as part of your studies abroad.
Note: this cover is optional with the CROUS plan.
3. Personal assistance
If your contract includes Mutuaide services, you may benefit from certain assistance services during your travels, including repatriation or medical transport when medical and contractual conditions are met.
The terms and limits of cover are set out in your assistance terms.
4. What about medical expenses abroad?
Étudassur home insurance is not comprehensive international health insurance.
For an Erasmus stay, an internship or a year of study abroad, we recommend that you check your medical cover and, if necessary, take out specific travel insurance with our partner Chapka.
To find out exactly what protection you have before you leave, consult your Policy Schedule and any assistance terms.
Am I covered during a stay or trip away from my home?
Travel-Stay cover is included in the Essential, XXL and XXL + Bike plans. It is not included in the CROUS plan.
This covers certain damage to your personal belongings taken with you during a stay of less than 3 months in a hotel, boarding house or building that you do not own.
Compensation is limited to €600, with an excess of €100.
The events covered and exclusions depend on the terms of the contract. Thefts committed outside buildings and in certain shared premises are excluded, in particular.
Note: this cover protects your personal belongings but is not comprehensive health or travel insurance.
Travel insurance
Does Étudassur also offer travel insurance?
Yes. Étudassur offers travel insurance through its partner Chapka:
- Going abroad (Erasmus, internship, gap year): from €26/month
- Come to France (international student coming to France): from €56/month
- Working Holiday Programme (WHP): from €36/month
These travel insurance policies are separate from home insurance and are taken out on the Chapka website via the links on the Étudassur site.⚠️ Chapka travel insurance and the Hiscox home insurance policy are two separate contracts with different administrators.
Is travel insurance mandatory for studying abroad?
Yes, in most cases. To obtain a student visa in many countries (USA, Canada, Australia, etc.), health insurance is mandatory. For Erasmus grants, health insurance is required. For Campus France, an insurance certificate may be required. The Chapka insurance offered by Etudassur is designed to meet these requirements.
💡 Check the specific requirements of your destination country — some require precise minimum coverage.
To prepare for your departure, also consult our guide on the insurance needed to study abroad.
What does Chapka travel insurance cover for students abroad?
Etudassur offers, through its partner Chapka, various travel insurance solutions tailored to students going abroad for their studies, an internship or a gap year.
Depending on the plan chosen, these insurances may cover:
-
medical and hospitalisation expenses abroad;
-
medical assistance and medical repatriation;
-
the presence of a relative in case of prolonged hospitalisation;
-
certain civil liability cover abroad;
-
various assistance services in case of difficulties during your stay.
The coverage amounts depend on the product subscribed, the destination and the contractual terms.
For example, the Cap Student and Cap Academy products have different guarantees and limits.
To find out the exact amounts, consult the guarantee table of the Chapka contract corresponding to your stay.
Chapka travel insurances are separate from your Etudassur home insurance contract.
I am an international student coming to study in France — what insurance do I need?
Etudassur offers via Chapka the “Come to France” insurance starting from €56/month, specifically designed for international students coming to France.
It covers medical expenses, assistance, and meets the requirements of Campus France and consulates for obtaining a student visa.
⚠️ This insurance is not a home insurance contract — it does not cover your accommodation in France. Subscribe separately to an Etudassur home insurance policy for your residence.
Is PVT insurance suitable for a Working Holiday Visa?
Yes. The Working Holiday Programme (PVT) insurance offered via Chapka (starting from €36/month) is specifically designed for Working Holiday Visas (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc.). It meets the minimum coverage requirements imposed by these countries for obtaining the visa.
💡 Subscribe via the Etudassur links on the PVT insurance page — you benefit from the negotiated rates with Chapka.
Does my Etudassur home insurance also cover my Erasmus stays?
Your Etudassur home insurance may provide partial cover during an Erasmus stay, depending on the plan you have subscribed to.
For your personal belongings: the Essential, XXL and XXL + Bike plans include a Travel-Stay guarantee covering certain damages to your belongings taken during a stay of less than 3 months, up to €600 and with an excess of €100.
This guarantee is not included in the CROUS plan.
For your civil liability: if your contract includes Private Life Civil Liability, this may apply during a stay of less than 3 months as part of your studies abroad.
Please note: Private Life Civil Liability is optional with the CROUS plan.
For your health: home insurance does not replace international health insurance. However, some medical and repatriation services may be provided by the assistance policy applicable to your contract.
For an Erasmus stay of more than 3 months, we recommend subscribing to a specific travel insurance tailored to your destination and the duration of your stay, particularly with our partner Chapka.
Do I need both home insurance AND travel insurance?
It depends on your situation: If you are going abroad and keeping your accommodation in France → Yes, both contracts are necessary: the home insurance covers your accommodation, Chapka covers your stay.
If you are leaving your accommodation permanently to go abroad → cancel your home insurance and subscribe only to travel insurance.
If you are coming to study in France from abroad → Etudassur home insurance for accommodation + Chapka’s Come to France for health.
Does my home insurance cover my liability during an internship abroad?
Yes, partially. The Personal Liability (RC Vie Privée) of your MRH policy extends worldwide for stays of less than 3 months. Damage to property entrusted during internships (paid or unpaid) is covered up to €300,000. For an internship lasting more than 3 months, complementary Chapka insurance is recommended for medical coverage and assistance.
Does my home in France remain covered if I go abroad for a long time?
Yes — your MRH policy explicitly states that your home remains insured even in the event of a prolonged absence. Fire, water damage and liability cover remain active. However, note that the concept of unoccupancy (more than 30 days without anyone in the home) may affect certain cover in extreme cases — contact contact@etudassur.fr if you are leaving for more than 3 months.
What is the difference between Chapka travel insurance and Etudassur home insurance?
These are two completely separate products:
Etudassur MRH Insurance (Hiscox): covers your home in France — fire, water damage, theft, tenant liability and personal liability. Managed by ACCS/Etudassur.
Chapka travel insurance: covers you personally abroad — medical expenses, repatriation, assistance. Managed by Chapka.
Both can coexist and complement each other if you go abroad while keeping your home in France.
Travel-stay guarantee
Are my belongings covered when I stay away from my home?
The Travel-Stay cover is included in the Essential, XXL and XXL + Bike plans. It is not included in the CROUS plan.
It covers certain damage to your personal belongings taken with you during a stay of less than 3 months in a hotel, boarding house or building you do not own.
Compensation is capped at €600, with a €100 excess.
The events covered and exclusions depend on the policy terms. Thefts committed outside buildings and in certain communal areas are notably excluded.
Please note: this cover protects your personal belongings but does not constitute health insurance or comprehensive travel insurance.
Does the travel-stay cover include my medical expenses abroad?
No. The Travel-Stay cover of your Etudassur home insurance covers certain damage to your personal belongings during trips but does not constitute health insurance abroad.
However, there is a distinction with personal assistance.
If your policy includes Mutuaide assistance, it may provide certain benefits during a covered trip of up to 90 consecutive days, including:
-
Coverage of medical expenses outside your country of residence up to €1,000, with a €15 excess.
-
Repatriation or medical transport when medical and contractual conditions are met.
-
Other assistance services depending on the circumstances.
These benefits remain subject to the terms and exclusions of the assistance policy.
For more extensive medical coverage during your studies or internships abroad, specific travel insurance is recommended.
You may wish to consult the offers from our partner Chapka.
Does my liability insurance cover me abroad?
Yes, your Étudassur home insurance may cover your Personal Liability (Responsabilité Civile Vie Privée) during a stay abroad, provided this cover is included in your policy.
In what situations am I covered?
Personal Liability cover applies in particular:
-
In metropolitan France, as part of your private life.
-
Worldwide during a stay or trip of less than 3 months as part of your studies abroad.
It may apply if you accidentally cause bodily injury or property damage to a third party, within the limits and conditions set out in your policy.
Check your plan:
-
CROUS: Personal Liability is an option. Check that it is included in your Policy Schedule.
-
Essential, XXL and XXL + Bike: Personal Liability is included.
What about an Erasmus stay of more than 3 months?
The cover provided for your studies abroad does not automatically extend to stays of 3 months or more.
It is therefore important to ensure you have insurance suited to the duration of your stay.
Finally, Personal Liability does not replace health insurance or travel insurance designed to cover your medical expenses abroad.
What is not covered during a stay?
Excluded are: thefts committed outside buildings and theft of items stored in a shared space. Only furniture inside the accommodation during the stay is covered.
Am I covered for an Erasmus programme or internship lasting more than 3 months?
After 3 months, the travel-stay cover and third-party liability abroad under your home insurance policy no longer apply. For a long stay (Erasmus, internship), take out a Chapka travel insurance policy via Etudassur, which covers medical expenses, assistance and repatriation for the entire duration.
To prepare for a long stay, also check out our practical guide to going on Erasmus. Read the article.

About us
Which brokerage group is behind Etudassur?
Etudassur is a brand of the brokerage firm ACCS (Assurances Courtage Conseils Services), based in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. A young and dynamic team specialising in student home insurance for over 10 years, which has developed a 100% web-based solution for subscribing to and managing policies.
Is Etudassur the insurer or an intermediary?
Etudassur is a brand of the insurance brokerage firm ACCS, registered with ORIAS under number 07 002 006.
Etudassur therefore acts as an insurance intermediary: we distribute policies, support policyholders and handle the follow-up of their requests.
For home insurance, Etudassur policies are underwritten by Hiscox SA.
For home assistance, the services provided under the policy are underwritten and implemented by Mutuaide Assistance, in accordance with its terms and conditions.
For travel insurance, Etudassur directs its clients to the offers of its partner Chapka, which acts as a specialist travel insurance broker. The insurer bearing the risk depends on the Chapka policy taken out.
In the event of a home insurance claim, you can contact the Etudassur team directly, who will assist you with your dealings with the relevant parties.
What does “No Low Cost – Just Right Cost” mean?
This is Etudassur’s motto: rather than offering the lowest price by reducing cover, the aim is to provide the right price with solid cover — honest limits (€4,500 to €7,500) and an excess reduced to €100.
Our goal is to offer students cover that is genuinely useful, tailored to their accommodation and situation, without adding unnecessary options that would increase the cost.
In other words: serious, straightforward and affordable protection at the fairest possible price.
How can I check that Etudassur is a registered broker?
ACCS (Etudassur) is registered with ORIAS under No. 07 002 006, which can be verified at www.orias.fr. This is the official register of insurance intermediaries in France. The activity is supervised by the ACPR (Autorité de Contrôle Prudentiel et de Résolution). The insurer Hiscox is also authorised and regulated.
What is Etudassur’s experience and size?
Etudassur supports over 200,000 insured clients and collaborates with more than 1,000 partner residences in France, backed by over 10 years of specialisation in student home insurance.
Partner residences
Our residence is not listed—how can we become a partner?
Contact the Etudassur sales team to discuss listing your residence. This makes it easier for your residents to subscribe and ensures automatic transmission of insurance certificates. Partnership terms will be defined with the team.
How can I check if a tenant has subscribed?
The home insurance certificate is automatically emailed to the address provided during the listing process as soon as the tenant subscribes by selecting your residence. No action is required on your part.
How can we obtain our marketing materials?
PDF brochures are available upon request—please specify if you would also like printed copies.
A claim affects a property—how does it work with the resident?
The resident reports the claim through their policy. In furnished accommodation, damage to the property often falls under the landlord’s insurance (IRSI agreement), while the resident’s personal belongings are covered by their own policy. The repair estimate must be in the name of the insured, not the residence.
